Welcome to Greece I

There is a little lane right next to our flat, at the end of it there has been a puddle of water ever since we moved in mid-February. On two separate occasions workers have come and they dig into the ground, yet the puddle just becomes worse and even bigger. A couple of days ago they were back and this time the water was shut off. You would think we live in a civilised western country, but no ... no warnings at all just no water coming out of the taps. 'Welcome to Greece!' as the ex-husband put it.

The other day I get a letter from the Council, telling me I might be applicable for a rebate or exemption from the council tax, however, I filled in a form just like this when we first moved in and since I am a student I am exempt from the tax. When the ex-husband moved in and told the council about his move, suddenly my status with them changed. Suddenly we got a letter saying I have to pay tax as well, but why? When they know I am a student at least until October? So I fill in the form again, although, we are moving house, and I will have to fill out another in a months time...'Welcome to Greece!'

Since we are moving house in less than a month I have to transfer all the bills (electricity, gas, telephone and line, and internet service) in most countries (well I am Scandinavian so that is basically what I mean) this would take a week tops, if that at all. However, on this island it takes about a month to even set up a telephone, not to speak of an internet connection. Of course there are the fees as well, to transfer anything costs money. So to continue paying the companies in question at a different address one has to pay them more, where in the world does that make sense? Paying fees for these companies to take ages? For me the logic is lost here, why take forever, why cut off your phone a week in advance and setting it up a week or two later at your new address, isn't that bad for business? I mean, think of all the phone calls one could make in that time...but no of course they don't loose any money because you have to pay the fees! 'Welcome to Greece!'

shouldn't it simply be "welcome to europe!"... ? isn't it the state of affairs we all have to get used to?

btw, lol, great to be able to laugh at everyday hassles from afar :-D

It shouldn't be welcome to anything other than Scotland or the UK really, but that's the way it is all over isn't it?
Thanks for finding my daily struggles funny, at least that's something!
